Working Abroad in the Motor Trade

The following information maybe seen as an aid to anyone wishing to work overseas in the Automotive Industry for the first time. It should enable you to answer many of the questions which frequently occur and to ensure that you yourself have thought through the basic realities of becoming an automotive Industry expat.

We have only looked at the Middle East Motor Industry in some detail, because this is the most common destination. However, we are not setting out to provide a full brief on the region and we would encourage each individual to do the maximum research.

Steele-Dixon works in Autmotive recruitment in West and Central Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, Australia, India, Australasia and The Far East. Our consultants would be pleased to discuss these locations when appropriate.

Stage One

This is a major step
Think carefully before you start
Do have clear reasons for working abroad
Do not focus on one aim – money, lifestyle, culture
Do have a balanced view
Do as much research as you can before you start
Plan ahead
Involve your family, partner, friends from the outset

Consider carefully your overall circumstances:

  • Marriage
  • Children/Schooling
  • Pets
  • Parents
  • Friends
  • House/Mortgage
  • Visas
  • Medical/Health Requirements
  • Qualifications/Educational Requirements

Realise that this is a life changing decision not a short term gain. Do realise that expat Motor Industry roles on contracts in the UAE etc. only carry UK style holidays and you may not be able to fly home for 9 – 10 months.
