Overseas Countries - The Middle East Motor Trade

Saudi Arabia – Population 2007 = 27,601,038

Much the largest market for vehicles in the region. There are a great number of expats working in the KSA in all types of industry and commerce. All Westerners will live in housing compounds which are a bit like officers quarters for the military. The compounds are secure often with their own leisure facilities and shops. It is a tougher location for families with restrictions on lifestyle – women for instance cannot drive. Earnings on the other hand are slightly higher in compensation. There are three main areas of employment, Jeddah on the West Coast, Riyadh the capital and Damman in the oilfield region in the East.

Kuwait – Population 2007 = 3,399,637

The northern most Gulf state. Everything essential to modern comfortable living is available.

Bahrain – Population 2007 = 1,046,814

Really an Island/City state which is linked by bridge to Saudi Arabia. A number of expats who work in the eastern region of Saudi actually choose to live here.

Qatar – Population 2008 (estimate) = 1,450,000

The Qatar economy has boomed in recent years as a result of natural gas exploration – it is aiming to become a second Dubai.

The UAE - Population 2008 (estimate) = 5,432,746 GMT + 4 HRS

Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

Dubai – This is the prime location for many British expats because it is seen as the most westernised and cosmopolitan location in the Gulf. It is easy for the British to adapt to its ways provided bright lights and the city life are for you. Most car manufacturers now have their Regional Office based here.

Abu Dhabi – the capital city is somewhat more conservative than its near neighbour. However investment and infrastructure is on a vast scale which will see it rivalling Dubai as a Commercial Centre.

Sharjah – Is in the northern Emirates. It is conservative and a dry state. The coastline is very attractive and less commercial.

Oman - Population

The southern most state is less developed that its northern neighbours with its capital Muscat for the moment almost free of shopping malls and similar western attractions. The economy is linked less to oil and gas and more to agriculture.
