Recruiting and retaining women in the motor industry

Women represent one of the fastest growing segments for car sales, but make up less than 20% of the motor industry workforce in the UK. “There are some examples of apprenticeship and awards schemes to attract more women”, says Valerie Boon of people development agency Energise, “but the industry is looking for more ideas in this area and could gain from drawing on best practice in other traditionally male-dominated sectors such as the police service and property industry.”

Motor manufacturers and retailers can often see the benefits of a better gender balance across the workforce, but how can they achieve this in practice? Energise has published a report entitled Women In The Driving Seat which includes a number of useful tips and case studies:

  • Women-only careers events – access to women already in the sector is vital as they are valuable role models
  • Maximising potential – check out the Springboard Women’s Development Programme to boost the confidence and ambition of staff and potential recruits
  • Work-life balance – create more part-time and job-share opportunities at all levels; link staff with children to family car design & sales
  • Mentoring and networking – create support networks; more experienced professionals can offer valuable encouragement to new recruits
The Energise report notes that no more than 2% of motor industry apprentices are currently female – and many girls are put off for just that reason. However, it adds, efforts are being made to increase the appeal. Examples include women’s networks, award schemes and promoting motor industry careers to girls through the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering & Technology, female-friendly apprenticeships and career advice in schools.
